Nestled along the pristine coast of Costa Rica, the community of Nosara has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past five decades, all thanks to the visionary efforts of the Nosara Civic Association (NCA). Founded in the late 1960s by American developer Alan Hutchinson, the NCA has been a driving force behind the region's sustainable development and environmental conservation. Let's take a closer look at the NCA's journey, from its humble beginnings to its impactful initiatives that continue to shape the paradise known as Nosara.

The Beginning of a Vision: 1969 - 1972

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Alan Hutchinson purchased three farms encompassing 1,110 hectares (2,718 acres) in the quaint community of Nosara. His vision was to create a sustainable residential complex that harmoniously coexisted with the breathtaking natural surroundings.

Uniting for a Common Purpose: 1975

As Hutchinson faced challenges fulfilling his commitment to providing amenities, the landowners joined hands to form the Nosara Civic Association. This collective effort aimed to protect the environment and ensure essential services for the community. With a shared purpose, the NCA embarked on a journey of growth and positive change.

Pioneering Essential Services: 1975-1980

The NCA's first priority was to provide residents with crucial services. Water, electricity, roads, and security became the foundation of Nosara's development. Temporary electricity was generated by NCA-operated volunteers, illuminating the community until a more permanent solution was in place.

Expanding the Horizons: 1985

Demonstrating its dedication to environmental conservation, the NCA donated part of its properties to be included within the Ostional Wildlife Refuge. During this period, the community witnessed remarkable growth with the establishm

ent of an airport, Post Office, Police station, ICE office, and telegraph office, all made possible through the NCA's support.

Championing Recycling: 1992

Environmental stewardship remained at the forefront of the NCA's initiatives. Members actively worked on promoting recycling and educating the community about its significance in preserving the natural beauty of the region.

A Landmark Achievement: 2004

Embracing a broader vision for the future, the NCA extended its mission to encompass the entire Nosara District. Focused on sustainable development, the NCA embarked on creating a Regulatory Plan for the district, ensuring a harmonious balance between progress and preservation.

Overcoming Waste Challenges: 2014

After two decades of grappling with waste disposal issues, the NCA triumphantly closed the garbage dump between Arenales and Pelada. Thanks to the NCA's efforts, the Municipality of Nicoya initiated proper garbage collection in Nosara, diverting waste to the Santa Cruz landfill.

Envisioning a Bright Future: 2023

Today, the NCA boasts a membership of over 200 individuals, united in their commitment to preserving Nosara's natural wonders. Beyond its core environmental focus, the NCA recently established Friends of Nosara, a coalition aimed at supporting local NGOs. Additionally, the NCA is leading the groundbreaking "Calle Modelo" project, a public-private initiative set to revitalize Guiones Main Street.

For nearly 50 years, the Nosara Civic Association has been the driving force behind Nosara's transformation from a small community to a thriving coastal paradise. With its unwavering dedication to sustainable growth and environmental conservation, the NCA stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for communities worldwide. As Nosara continues to evolve, the NCA's legacy will remain etched in the hearts of its residents, guiding them towards a future of harmony, progress, and preservation.
